Remaster Process
The remaster process is an original concept created by Dennis Mathewson to simulate original artwork and print together as one.
First Dennis selects a piece of raw aluminum the same as one of his original artworks and then cleans it. Dennis then selects one of his original background hand ground images such as bamboo, palms or any other image that usually is similar if not the same as the original painting that is to be printed on the aluminum panel. He the hand grinds the artwork and cleans and washes it. It is then treated with the special acid wash and metal etching solutions and then wiped clean. The metal art panel is put inside Dennis’s industrial spray booth where he sprays it with his special adhesion promoter.
The next step is Dennis mixes one of his special tinted clear coats same as an original is done. Four heavy even coats of the special tinted clear coat are applied and the one final heavy clean clear coat is sprayed on top the tinted clear to seal it. The aluminum is then allowed to cure for three days and then hand sanded to a perfectly smooth surface. At that point the aluminum panel is cleaned, wrapped and then shipped to the special metal printer not in Hawaii where a special highest quality print is applied to the original metal art. Dennis allows a window of area where the print will be placed to his specific directions. The print has been hand designed, color adjusted, sized and placement all by Dennis’s precise directions.
Once the printing is done on the original metal artwork then the aluminum panel is shipped back to Dennis where he inspects each one closely. Dennis then takes the printed metal art panel and then places it on his easel where he hand highlights areas he feels need more color, contrast or even brightness. He uses his airbrush as well as conventional brushes to apply all these additional highlights to the metal art. Often Dennis will even add new images like plants, bubbles, boarders and even characters to some of the prints.
Each one is very different and has much original artwork added to it as well as more color added over the print itself. Once all the additions are made to the print and it is hand signed in paint it then goes back into the industrial spray booth where it is final clear coated with four coats of high strength industrial acrylic urethane clear. It is allowed to cure three days then hand sanded and buffed to perfection. Again the surface is waxed and cleaned and ready for delivery.
The results are what Dennis calls a remaster not just a print but a high breed part original and part print. The results are amazing as close as can be to the original artwork. Then again it is original and some artists would claim it as such, but for Dennis he can produce a limited few of these and openly explains it true process that he created and designed.
Each remaster is very limited and only a few will ever be made do to all the processing. Each remaster is only hand signed and numbered on the back only and a document or originality is given with each one and its number. The reason they are not numbered on the front is because they are so much and original they need to be viewed and appreciated that way. Numbering the front only leads people to think it’s just a print and it is not. It’s a special remaster and Dennis may only make a few of each one and some only may have one remaster and others may have 10 but never will there be more then 100 remaster made of any one design. Once framed placing this remaster under a good lighting source it gives all the same magic dance that Dennis’s original have with all the qualities of Dennis’s fine art in a more affordable product for you to enjoy for years and years to come.

Cosmic Tiki is the official site for the fine art work of Dennis Mathewson. Dennis is truly one of the pioneers of Custom painting and airbrushing. As a naturally artistic kid, back in the 70's he started out with his first airbrush. After a few years he went to work airbrushing shirts at the Rat's Hole for the late Karl Smith, founder of the famous Rat's Hole Chopper Show in Daytona Beach Florida.
